President John Dramani Mahama has said the government has no plans to sponsor the travel of supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He explained that flying and accommodating only 200 supporters could cost the state almost $2 million.
Speaking at the Ghana World Cup fundraising campaign on Friday, March 20, 2026, the President stated that the decision is in line with the Dzamefe Report recommendations.
“The cost of flying and accommodating even just 200 supporters is very costly. So in accordance with the Dzamefe Report, the government has no plans to allocate public funds to fly supporters to the World Cup.” The President announced.
The President believes that it is imperative for Ghanaian supporters to be present at the tournament but the government must prioritise the use of public resources.
Mr. Mahama emphasised the need to channel the state resources to job creation.
