The Techiman North District Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has issued a strong warning to residents to take precautionary measures against anticipated rainstorms in April, particularly during the Easter festivities.
According to the District Director, Adamu Mohammed, the area has consistently experienced severe rainstorms during this period, leading to incidents such as ripped-off roofs, collapsed buildings, and the falling of billboards and signposts.
In a press release, the Directorate urged traditional leaders, family heads, religious institutions, landlords, and heads of institutions to take immediate steps to identify and address dilapidated structures within their communities.
The statement explained that such structures pose significant risks during storms and must either be repaired or safely demolished to prevent disasters
The Directorate further disclosed that NADMO officials have already issued warnings to owners and occupants of weak and unsafe structures, adding that documentation of such buildings is currently ongoing. Individuals who fail to comply with the directives risk facing appropriate sanctions.
“The public is further informed that NADMO officers have issued several warnings to owners and occupants of such structures. The Directorate is currently documenting these buildings and will take the appropriate action against individuals who fail to comply.”
Residents who have placed stones on rooftops were also cautioned to remove them immediately and carry out necessary repairs, as such practices could worsen the impact of strong winds.
The Techiman North NADMO office reiterated the importance of collective responsibility in disaster prevention, calling on all residents to remain vigilant and proactive.
“Additionally, building owners who have placed stones on rooftops are strongly advised to remove them and undertake the necessary repairs to prevent further damage during rainstorms. Let us all work together to ensure a disaster-free Easter celebration.”
The statement concluded with a call for unity in ensuring a safe and disaster-free Easter celebration, stressing that prevention remains the most effective way to mitigate risks.
