Austria has joined other countries to ban social media for children aged under 14.
Vice- Chancellor Andreas Babler who made the announcement said it is imperative to restrict children online.
He said introducing restrictions for children online would help them from becoming addicted and ill.
According to him, it was the responsibility of politicians to protect children like how alcohol or tobacco was treated.
“Other information providers have clear rules to protect young people from harmful content” He indicated.
It is currently not clear when the implementation will take effect.
Meanwhile, other countries like the UK has launched a consultation on banning social media for under-16s, while Denmark, Greece, Spain and Ireland are also considering similar moves: Spain and Ireland for under-16s, and Denmark and Greece for under-15s.
