Former Member of Parliament for Asunafo North Constituency and 2017 Best Farmer for Asutifi North, Hon. Robert Sarfo Mensah, has cautioned that President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to convene an emergency Cabinet meeting over challenges in the cocoa sector will not, on its own, resolve the deepening crisis confronting cocoa farmers.

According to him, the situation demands urgent financial intervention, insisting that government must consider securing a loan to enable the immediate payment of cocoa farmers across the country.

Hon. Sarfo Mensah made the call in an interview on the ASTA FM Kokrokoo morning show on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. He noted that many cocoa farmers are currently under severe strain due to delays in payments and the rising cost of farm inputs, a situation he said is negatively affecting productivity and livelihoods.

The former lawmaker warned that failure to take swift and decisive action could demotivate farmers, lead to a decline in cocoa production, and ultimately pose risks to Ghana’s economic stability.

“If this situation is allowed to linger, farmers will lose interest, production will drop, and the consequences for the national economy will be serious.” He cautioned.

He therefore called on government to place the welfare of cocoa farmers at the center of its response, urging the implementation of both immediate and long-term measures to stabilize the sector and ensure sustainable growth.

He also appealed to key stakeholders, including the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) and financial institutions, to work closely with government to develop practical and timely solutions to safeguard the future of Ghana’s cocoa industry.
