The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Russian Ambassador to Ghana over the alleged unlawful publication of sexually explicit images involving Ghanaian women without their consent.
In a press release issued in Accra on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the Ministry confirmed that His Excellency Sergei Berdnikov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Ghana, was invited on the instructions of the Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs to officially register the Government’s strong protest.
The Ministry explained that the summons followed reports that a supposed Russian national had unlawfully published intimate images of Ghanaian women, an act it described as atrocious and a clear violation of Ghanaian law.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Ghana, His Excellency Sergei Berdnikov was summoned today, Tuesday, 17th February, 2026 on the instruction of the Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs over the conduct of a supposed Russian national in unlawfully publishing sexually explicit images of Ghanaian women without their consent.
The objective of the summons was to formally express the strong displeasure of the Government of Ghana at the atrocious conduct of the supposed Russian which clearly violates Ghanaian law, and to seek the cooperation of Russia in pursuing justice.”
According to the statement, the Government of Ghana formally expressed its displeasure and sought the cooperation of the Russian Federation to ensure that justice is pursued.
Ambassador Sergei Berdnikov acknowledged the violation of the privacy and dignity of the victims and admitted the broader cybercrime implications of the incident. He, however, indicated that he could not confirm the Russian nationality of the individual at the centre of the viral videos.
The Ambassador further clarified that the name circulating in sections of the media as that of the suspect is not recognised as a Russian name, explaining that it rather represents an inappropriate or vulgar expression in the Russian language.
“The Russian Ambassador, however, indicated that he is unable to confirm the Russian nationality of the individual at the centre of the intimate viral videos, and further disclosed that the purported name making the rounds in the media is not a known Russian name and rather represents an inappropriate or vulgar expression in the Russian language.”
He disclosed that similar activities linked to the said individual had been reported in other countries and were under investigation by Russian authorities.
Despite the absence of a legally binding extradition treaty between Ghana and Russia, the Ambassador pledged the Embassy’s readiness to share relevant information to support Ghana’s efforts to apprehend the suspect and bring him to justice.
“The Ambassador highlighted similar activities of the said individual in other countries which had come to the attention of Russian authorities and was being investigated by Russian experts.
“Ambassador Sergei Berdnikov has pledged that the Embassy in Ghana is willing to share information on the matter to facilitate Ghana’s ongoing efforts aimed at apprehending the individual and bringing him to justice, within the context of our longstanding bilateral relations despite the absence of a legally binding extradition treaty.”
The Ministry assured the general public of its commitment to leverage the cordial bilateral relations between Ghana and Russia and to explore all available international mechanisms to secure justice for the victims.
