Hajia Amina Adam, the wife of the late Ayawaso East Member of Parliament (MP) has declared her intention to contest the upcoming by-election.
The late Mahama Naser Toure passed away after a short illness.
The Electoral Commission (EC) subsequently, declared the seat vacant on January 16, 2026. Adding that the parliamentary by-election for the Ayawaso East Constituency will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution.
The widow in a statement issued on Thursday, January 22, announced that she is willing to contest the upcoming by-election.
According to her, the decision to contest the by-election was influenced by clarion calls from many quarters in the constituency.
“Excessive calls from constituents, grassroots members, and elders of the constituency to step into her late husband’s role influenced my decision to contest the by-election. I promised that I won’t disappoint you as I step into the shoes of my late husband” Hajia Adam announced.
The Ayawaso East constituency has been a stronghold of the ruling National Democratic Congress.
During the Parliamentary elections in 2024, the late National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, Mahama Naser Toure, won with 22, 139 votes representing 70.85 per cent, while his sole contender, Zak Rahman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), obtained 9,110 votes representing 29.15 percent out of the total votes of 31, 249.
According to reports, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, a legal practitioner and Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria, also Dr Yakubu Azindow, are all possible candidates to contest the by-election.
The NDC has since announced guidelines as part of their preparation to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary in the Greater Accra Region.
