The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) Dr. Randy Abbey reacted to the Minority in Parliament call for his dismissal.
According to the former presenter, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) inherited the present crisis in the cocoa sector.
Adding that the financial model they are using is also not a new system the NDC has introduced.
“We inherited the fictional model we are using so we have to adopt a new system that is sustainable and that is what we are working on.” Randy Abbey said in an interview while addressing the ongoing reforms in the cocoa sector.
He stressed that COCOBOD is facing numerous challenges including traditional syndicated loans arrangement. Which, according to him, collapsed.
Randy Abbey’s response follows the call from the Minority that he should be removed from the office.
Addressing the media, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah stated that President Mahama should respectfully relieve the COCOBOD Board CEO of his responsibilities.
The Minority added that some farmers are planning for a demonstration against the reduction of cocoa producer prices.
“The NDC government should absorb the cost of what they have done and protect the cocoa farmer and restore at least the GHC 3, 625 that they promised. This GHC 2,800 or so that they are promising is unacceptable.’ Already, we are receiving messages from cocoa farmers who say that if the challenge is going to continue like this, they are going to hit the streets. And if they do the demonstration, we will join them in the streets to do this demonstration.” Kojo Oppong Nkrumah fumed.
